Omeka Player

Problem Statement

The Vermont Music Archive wants to establish itself as an online library capable of allowing the public to listen to music in its collection in a controlled fashion. A key requirement is preventing its audio tracks from being downloaded or played simultaneously by multiple site visitors. The Archive will be stored on the Omeka platform.

Project Summary

The goal of the Vermont Music Archive is to ensure that local music becomes part of Vermont’s cultural legacy, preserving the music for future generations and celebrating it in the present.  The Archive would like to follow in the footsteps of libaries which typically create no more than three digital versions of a copyrighted artifact and make one available on the library site.  In order to provide this functionality on the Omeka platform, a plugin was created with the following constraints:

  • Visitors should not be able to download the music
  • The number of visitors able play an individual track simultaneously should be configurable
  • The plugin should be open source and made available to the public
  • The plugin should work with any Omeka theme that uses the standard Omeka theming display functions

Current Status

Several years ago Code for BTV created a Wordpress plugin that provided some of the required features.  Unfortunately it cannot be used with the  Omeka platform.

The project was revived in the spring of 2018 as an Omeka plugin, re-designed and implemented by Christina Hamilton, and is nearing completion.
